Development condition: motorway-like

The Ostwestfalendamm is the motorway-like developed Bielefeld city expressway along the federal highway 61 . Colloquially it is also called "OWD" or "Ossi" .

It leads from the end of the East Westphalia tunnel from the Ernst-Rein-Straße driveway to the A 33 in Bielefeld- Brackwede . Most recently, on December 5, 2012, the 1.4 kilometer section from the Südring in Brackwede to the A 33 (AS Bielefeld-Zentrum) was opened to traffic.

East Westphalia Tunnel

The 535 m long Ostwestfalentunnel, which has one tube for each direction of travel, leads from the corner of Eckendorfer Strasse / Walther-Rathenau-Strasse under the Hanover-Ruhr area railway line to the beginning of the Ostwestfalendamm at the Ernst-Rein-Strasse driveway . The maximum speed in the tunnel is 60 km / h, which is monitored by fixed radar controls in both directions. According to the city of Bielefeld, the construction costs of the tunnel amounted to around 70 million euros. In 2006 the tunnel was expanded to install new and modern technology.

noise protection

The inner-city location leads to problems due to noise emissions. In addition to structural measures (e.g. noise barriers ), this was countered after political pressure from the population and the establishment of citizens' initiatives by reducing the speed in downtown locations at night.

Earlier planning

The Ostwestfalendamm was planned as a relief road for the Bielefeld city center. Coming from the west, traffic has hitherto been routed over the Bielefelder Pass and landed in the middle of the city center. The construction should relieve the increasing inner-city traffic. The design as a four- to six-lane road led to a lane through the middle of the city along the railway line and was understood as planning a city that was suitable for traffic. This bundling of traffic has an impact on many inner-city residential areas . 120 houses were demolished for the construction, at that time a significant reduction in the supply of apartments, as well as reason for housing speculation and the deterioration of houses that were affected by the planning. The additional noise and exhaust emissions as well as the one-sided traffic policy per car were criticized in many parts of the population and ultimately also led to the establishment of the “ colorful list ” in the Bielefeld city parliament. In the planning phase, the third construction phase should be completed in 1994, but the last connections will not take place until the second decade of the 21st century.

In the 1970s, Ostwestfalendamm was part of the plans for a federal motorway 47 . The East Westphalia tunnel was part of a federal motorway 35, which was also not realized . The connection between Ostwestfalendamm and the Ostwestfalentunnel in a long curve and the high-flyer at the exit "Ernst-Rein-Straße" are the only parts of a planned motorway intersection. After the final abandonment of the traffic planning, the construction of a new football stadium for the Arminia Bielefeld club on the area that would become available there was discussed in the 1990s.
