Oswald Übergger

Oswald Übergger (* 1971 in Sterzing ) is a German-speaking Italian historian from South Tyrol .

Life

After graduating from high school in Sterzing, Übergger studied history and political science at the Leopold Franzens University in Innsbruck . His diploma thesis , accepted in 1996, examined the community of Freienfeld at the time of fascism . At the same university he obtained his doctorate with the dissertation submitted in 2005 on Tyrolean military justice in the First World War . Overgger also took on numerous teaching posts at his alma mater . He is a long-time member of the Bolzano working group History and Region / Storia e regione . From 2010 to 2013 he was a Research Fellow at the Institute for History at the University of Hildesheim , where he was in charge of the DFG research project “Military Norm Violations and Warfare. War atrocities of the Central Powers in World War I ”. Since the end of 2013 Überegger directs the at the Free University of Bolzano established Center for Regional History .

Übergger's research focuses on the social, mental and cultural history of the First World War, "new" military history , historical peace and conflict research , the history of violence and genocide, historical cultures of remembrance , Austrian and Italian history of the 19th and 20th centuries and modern regional history (especially the Alpine region ).
