Oswald Beling (born June 7, 1625 in Itzehoe ; † August 7, 1646 in Kassel ) was a German officer.

Live and act

Oswald Beling was the son of Bonifacius Beling and his wife Elisabeth . The father was an officer in the Danish service and died around 1630. Beling then spent a few years with his mother at Gut Bekhof with Major General Hieronymus von Plessen, who was one of King Christian IV and Duke Friedrich III. commanded the established cavalry. Plessen had hired Elisabeth Beling as housekeeper. Oswald Beling himself wrote in the dedication of a poem to Friedrich III that von Plessen adopted him and raised him “ summa industria ac cura ”.

Beling attended a school in Itzehoe. Von Plessen died on August 2, 1639 and bequeathed him 3,000 thalers in his will. In 1640 Beling received a scholarship for the Sorø Akademi . Presumably in 1641 he went to Gottorf and spent more than two years with Adam Olearius , according to a dedication of a translation "umb the fundamentals in the mathematical arts / fornemblich something to warfare ... useful / to learn". Although he did not come from the nobility, he received an education that pursued the aim of combining scholarly education and military proficiency. Olearius therefore advised him to work as a writer. A poem of praise to Friedrich III is known today. and a translation of Virgil's Eclogues , which he completed in 1642. Olearius, who certainly helped Beling, received the suggestion for this from Martin Opitz in 1630 . In his translation, Beling worked according to Opitz's principle: he reproduced the ancient long text in the form of Alexandrians and did not intend, as in earlier translations, to leave pupils with hints to understand the original. Instead, he recreated the historical text and tried to show that the German language was suitable for modern poetry. This translation is probably the first known poetic translation of Virgil's pastoral poems into German. Olearius published it several years after Beling's death. It was a high quality font in terms of content, but it obviously had no effect.

During the Torstensson War , Beling placed himself in the service of Cai von Ahlefeldt as an ensign and fought on the Danish side. In connection with the peace negotiations initiated by Brömsebro in February 1645 , he switched to a Hessian troop, which Detlev von Ahlefeldt probably put together. He died shortly after of smallpox .

Beling's apparently very wealthy mother had her deceased son buried at the Marienkirche in Rendsburg . On this occasion she gave the church the high altar by the carver Henning Claussen , two candlesticks and money. In memory of her husband and son, in 1650 she financed the entire construction of the Trinity Church designed by Adam Olearius in Schleswig-Friedrichsberg, including furnishings and pastorate (Elisabeth-Beling-Haus). In the church, a baroque epitaph from 1668 with a family coat of arms and donor figures commemorates this foundation and the Beling family. It is assigned to the work of the Eckernförde carver Hans Gudewerth the Younger .
