Location and description
The protected area was created by ordinance of the former Waiblingen District Office for the protection of parts of the landscape in the Waiblingen district of November 4, 1968. By ordinance of the Rems-Murr District District Office on the Ottilienberg landscape protection area in the area of the city of Schorndorf from October 29, 2018, the area was opened created a new legal basis. The ordinance of 1968 ceased to apply insofar as areas of the previous Ottilienberg landscape protection area were affected. It covers the entire summit area of the Ottilienberg and is directly adjacent to the built-up areas. In the northern area there are even several built-up plots within the scope. It belongs to the natural area 107- Schurwald and Welzheimer Wald within the natural spatial main unit 10- Swabian Keuper-Lias-Land . The conservation area Rehfeld, Hof, Steinmäurich, Heiligenäcker and the surrounding area borders on to the south. The EU bird sanctuary no. 7123-441 orchards and vineyards between Geradstetten, Rudersberg and Waldhausen and the FFH area no. 7222-341 Schurwald are adjacent.
Protection purpose
According to the Protected Area Ordinance, the essential protection purpose is the diversity, uniqueness and beauty and the special cultural-historical importance of the landscape, also because of its special importance for recreation, as well as the performance and functionality of the natural balance and the regenerative capacity and sustainable usability of natural goods including habitats and To preserve, develop and restore habitats of certain wild animal and plant species. The protection of the Ottilienberg aims to preserve a very remarkable Keuper-Zeugenberg with a geomorphologically distinctive round mountain cone, which is integrated into the southern edge of the settlement of Schorndorf as an open space and an important recreational area. Linked to this is the sustainable safeguarding of the site-adapted use of the orchards, which, in addition to their function as a habitat for plants and animals, also significantly shape the landscape. Furthermore, the aim is to protect the oak-dominated field trees on the silica sandstone dome and other wooded areas that characterize the landscape, which as important biotope structures complement the specific character, diversity and beauty of the area.
