Otto Beck (born May 19, 1846 in Krautheim , † March 30, 1908 in Mannheim ) was a German politician . From 1891 to 1908 he was Lord Mayor of Mannheim.

Life

Beck attended grammar schools in Tauberbischofsheim and Konstanz and studied law at Heidelberg University . In 1871 he entered the Baden state service, passed through several district offices and in 1879 became senior official . In 1891 he was elected Lord Mayor of Mannheim and remained so until his death in 1908.

Beck's tenure as head of Mannheim was marked by the exceptionally prosperous development of the city. The population rose from 80,000 to 177,000. The city administration's staff has been quintupled and a large number of infrastructure measures have been implemented. The tram was electrified, a number of parts of the city received sewers and the industrial port was built by 1907 . In the same year the commercial college was founded. Beck sponsored Joseph Anton Sickinger , who developed the so-called Mannheim school system , and made it possible to build numerous schools.

The highlights of Beck's tenure include the construction of the rose garden , with the largest assembly hall in the German Reich at the time , and the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the city in 1907. The “International Art and Horticultural Exhibition” that took place there welcomed four and a half million guests and was the hour of birth the art gallery .

His son Karl Beck became a doctor in Heidelberg .

Honors

The University of Heidelberg awarded Beck an honorary doctorate . The city of Mannheim named a street after him while he was still alive and maintains his grave as an honorary grave .
