Otto Blümel

Otto Blümel (born October 21, 1881 in Augsburg , Germany ; † October 27, 1973 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen ) was a German designer , book jewelery and bookplate artist. One of his best-known works is the Nymphenburg coat stand from 1908.

Life

In 1901 Blümel began studying architecture at the Technical University of Munich . After dropping out of his studies in 1904, Otto Blümel worked as a freelancer at the Debschitz School in Munich . In 1909 Blümel made the acquaintance of Hermann Hesse and Ludwig Finckh in Gaienhofen . In the following years several works for and with Hermann Hesse followed. In 1916 he moved to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and worked as a drawing teacher at the wood carving school, for which he was director from 1920 to 1949.

Blumel fought from the beginning of the first World War on the Western Front . In 1917 he married Therese Lutz. The marriage resulted in daughter Margarethe (* 1920) and son Walter (* 1922). The market town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen made Otto Blümel an honorary citizen in 1963 . Blümel died on October 27, 1973 at the age of 92 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
