Otto Christian Hammer (born August 22, 1822 in Hulerød , Søborg Sogn , Denmark ; † March 10, 1892 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish naval officer and commander in the German-Danish War .

Life

He was the son of the district commissioner and inspector Frederik Abel Hammer (?? - 1877) and Elisabeth Kirstine Lemvigh (1794–1849). Hammer married on February 28, 1851 at Hjortholm Castle ( South Langeland ) Henriette Jacobine Hastrup (born September 3, 1830 at Hjortholm Castle), daughter of the landowner Julianus Jensen Hastrup (1780–1863), from 1823 to 1863 landlord on Hjortholm, and Anna Cecilie Høffding (1791–1861).

Hammer joined the Naval Academy as a midshipman in 1837 and was promoted to second lieutenant on August 3, 1843 . Eight years later, on August 3, 1851, he was promoted to lieutenant prime and on February 17, 1858, to lieutenant captain.

In the German-Danish War (1864) he was the commander of the Danish naval units on the North Frisian Islands based in Wyk on Föhr . As the commander of a Danish flotilla , thanks to his good knowledge of the Wadden Sea, he initially fought successfully against the overwhelming power of the Prussian-Austrian alliance. But when the requested support from the Danish fleet failed to materialize and the opponents of the alliance first captured Sylt and on July 16 also Föhr , he was finally taken on July 19, 1864 in Wyk u. a. captured by the Prussian lieutenant Ernst von Prittwitz and Gaffron and held in German captivity until August. His opponents described him as a “Viking tyrannizing the country and its people”, but he was respected by the Danish-minded islanders and was presented with a saber of honor at the end of the war . After the war he represented the Danish offices of Hadersleben, Tondern and Lügumkloster in Landsting , Denmark, for a short time before his mandate ceased when Schleswig was taken over by Prussia. Between 1865 and 1871 he ran a fishing and whaling company

On April 6, 1889, Hammer was appointed captain .
