Military career

Prittwitz joined the Guards Artillery Regiment of the Prussian Army in Berlin in 1851 , became second lieutenant in 1853 and first lieutenant in 1861 . In the German-Danish War in Schleswig-Holstein in 1864 he was assigned to General Helmuth Graf von Moltke , the Chief of the Army General Staff . Here he was involved on July 19, 1864 in Wyk auf Föhr in the capture of Lieutenant Otto Christian Hammer , commander of the Danish naval units on the North Frisian Islands , and on June 29, 1864 during the transition to Alsen , where the final decision was made. For this Prittwitz received the Red Eagle Order IV. Class with Swords and an honorary citizen of the city of Wyk auf Föhr.

Promoted to captain in 1865 , he commanded a cavalry battery when the war against Austria broke out in 1866, when he took part in the campaign in Bohemia . At the end of the war, this battery was assigned to the newly formed Hanoverian Field Artillery Regiment No. 10 . Prittwitz was therefore transferred to Hanover in the autumn of 1866 , but returned to the Guard after three quarters of a year.

After the end of the war, Prittwitz made several trips abroad to England, France, Spain and Italy, and in 1869 went to Romania as the military companion of Crown Prince Friedrich and traveled with him to part of the Orient.

In the war against France in 1870/71 Prittwitz took part in the battles of Gravelotte , Sedan - where he was wounded by a grenade - and the conquest of Montmédy . His battery was the first to reach the heights of St. Privat (near Gravelotte) and successfully fought the French. In 1872 he was appointed major , in 1883 colonel and on September 18, 1886, commander of the 7th Field Artillery Brigade in Münster . Since 1888 Major General , Prittwitz was put up for disposition on March 24, 1890 with the approval of his resignation letter and the character of Lieutenant General with the statutory pension .
