Otto Forst de Battaglia (born March 21, 1889 in Vienna ; † May 2, 1965 ibid) was an Austrian historian , literary critic , translator and promoter of Polish culture.

Life

Otto Forst de Battaglia was born to Jakob Forst (1839–1902) and Rosemarie Charmatz (1861–1941). His father came to Vienna from Przemyśl in the late 1850s . Otto Forst married Helene Freiin von Battaglia de Sopramonte e Ponte Alto in 1912 and in 1913 added the family name of his wife to his name "Forst".

Otto Forst attended the Schottengymnasium in Vienna , where he met the later historian Oskar Halecki . After graduating from high school , he studied law at the University of Vienna . He worked in Vienna until 1938, after which he moved to Belgium , and in 1940 to Switzerland , where he stayed until 1947. Back in Vienna he gave lectures on Polish history, culture and genealogy at the university there .

He wrote numerous works on important figures in Polish history, such as the kings John III. Sobieski and his wife Marie Casimire Louise de la Grange d'Arquien and Stanislaus II. August Poniatowski . He also dealt with French literature. His works were published in German, French and Polish. He was a literary collaborator for many Polish cultural magazines, such as Wiadomości Literackie , Pologne Littéraire , Czas and Przegląd Współczesny . He also wrote under the pseudonym Kyrill Boldirev.

His heirs gave his collection of books on Polish culture on loan from the library of the Scientific Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Vienna.
