Otto Gert Folberth (born November 28, 1924 in Mediaș , Romania ; † February 10, 2018 ) was a German physicist who dealt with semiconductor technology. He headed semiconductor research at IBM in Böblingen and was honorary professor at the University of Stuttgart .

Life

Otto Folberth, son of the pedagogue, historian and publicist Otto Folberth , attended elementary school and grammar school in his hometown Mediasch from 1931 to 1943. From 1946 he was a student of physics at the University of Stuttgart (degrees: physicist 1951, doctor of natural sciences 1952).

From 1952 to 1960 Folberth was a research assistant in the research laboratory of Siemens-Schuckert-Werke AG in Erlangen . He was mainly concerned with researching new semiconducting compounds and their mixed crystals. For example, he held a patent for the manufacture of red light-emitting diodes . From 1961 he headed the development of semiconductor research and development at IBM Deutschland GmbH in Böblingen. The highly integrated semiconductor components developed there were used in many IBM computer systems marketed worldwide. The pioneering achievements in this area within IBM in Böblingen also led to the establishment of an IBM semiconductor plant in Sindelfingen . Folberth was head of semiconductor and process development there. He was with IBM in the USA for a long time and from 1983 until his retirement in 1989 Folberth was director of science at IBM Germany. He last lived in Bad Windsheim .

From 1968 to 1988 Folberth was a lecturer , from 1974 honorary professor , for the subject of technology of integrated semiconductor circuits at the University of Stuttgart .

Folberth was the author / co-author of around 150 technical and scientific articles, patent specifications and books.

Folberth was an active member in several scientific-technical associations, u. a. in the German Physical Society (President 1988–1990, Vice President 1990–1992) and in the European Physical Society (1988–1992 member of the Executive Committee).

In 1974 he became an IBM Fellow .
