Otto Heidmüller (born January 23, 1845 in Hamburg , † July 12, 1922 in Wismar ; full name: Otto Heinrich Wilhelm Moritz Heidmüller ) was a German publisher and Low German poet.

Life

Otto Heidmüller was the son of the Hamburg goldsmith Franz Heidmüller. He grew up in Hamburg and got a good education. From 1859 to 1862 he was private secretary in Edinburgh, Scotland . On June 1, 1863, he began an apprenticeship in the Wismarschen publishing bookstore owned by Dethloff Carl Hinstorff . After his apprenticeship, Otto Heidmüller worked as an assistant for various bookshops in Olomouc and Vienna from 1868 to 1877 , before he returned to Wismar and worked again at Hinstorff Verlag . After Hinstorff's death in 1882, he and Hinstorff's son-in-law Heinrich Witte ran the Wismar print shop, which he was able to buy in 1907. Together with his partner, he managed this until his death.

Otto Heidmüller wrote Low German poems in the tradition of Fritz Reuter , those in the Großherzoglich Mecklenburg-Schweriner and Mecklenburg-Strelitzer calendars published by Hinstorff , the forerunner of the Voss-un Haas calendars published from 1935 to 1942 , which are still under this name today appears, published. This calendar was founded by Hinstorff in 1864 and enjoyed great popularity far beyond the country's borders. Heidmüller's publications, mostly verses written for children with folk illustrations, were not published under his name, he only used an abbreviation. From 1890 to 1923 over 150 poems “För de Gören” (For the Children) were printed, in total there were more than 230 joke poems, dance songs, riddles and other small texts. The number cannot be determined, as he initially wrote completely anonymously. Heidmüller was very close to Hinstorff's most important author, Fritz Reuter: after his publishing privileges had expired in 1904, he published Reuter's “Stromtid” in a high German version. Otto Heidmüller also wrote a festival and operetta texts.
