Otto Herschel

Otto Hans Herschel (born December 30, 1871 in Teplitz-Schönau , † December 14, 1958 in Richmond , Virginia ) was an Austrian painter of Jewish descent.

Live and act

Otto Herschel studied at the Vienna School of Applied Arts under Franz Matsch , then from 1896 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Carl von Marr .

Then he was mainly active in Vienna; From 1900 to 1926 he made numerous study trips to Holland, where he painted many city pictures. He married Klara Wiener (1885–1967), who was born in Amsterdam . In 1908 he became a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus . After the annexation of Austria he came with his family to the Netherlands, then emigrated with his wife to the USA on April 10, 1940, one month before the invasion of German troops, where he carried 750 of his works with him. His wife's siblings took their own lives in the Netherlands.

He settled in Saint Petersburg ( Florida ) in 1942 . In the same year he showed his works there at an exhibition. In 1946 he became an American citizen and called himself Otto John Hershel . After the death of her husband, Klara Herschel returned to the Netherlands.
