Otto Kanturek
Otto Kanturek (born July 27, 1897 in Vienna , † June 26, 1941 near Cawston , Norfolk ) was an Austrian cameraman and film director .
Life
Kanturek underwent training at the Graphic Education and Research Institute in Vienna. After an internship at the Gaumont Wochenschau, he came to film as a camera assistant in 1912 . In 1913 he followed a call from producer Erich Pommer to Paris . There he filmed for the newsreels of the companies Pathé , Gaumont and Éclair .
In 1914 he went to Milano-Film in Milan , in 1915 to Sascha-Film in Vienna and to Alexander Korda in Budapest . In 1916 he was drafted and was in special photographic services. During the war he made his debut as chief cameraman.
In 1920 he came to Berlin . In the 1920s he made numerous films, including Fritz Lang's Frau im Mond . After the " seizure of power " by the National Socialists in 1933, he left Germany. He came to London at the end of 1933 via Vienna and Prague , where he directed the film Das Häuschen in Grinzing .
Here he successfully continued his work as a cameraman, including with You are my heart with Richard Tauber . He also reappeared as a director with the love story The Student's Romance . He died while shooting the film A Yank in the RAF when a Hawker Hurricane collided with his Avro Anson .
