Otto Meyer (born June 23, 1926 in Burgau ; † June 25, 2014 there ) was a German educator and politician ( CSU ).

Life and work

Otto Meyer attended the humanistic high school in Günzburg (Abitur). He did military service as an Air Force helper, in the Reich Labor Service and in the Air Force. After the war he made himself available as a substitute teacher and taught at the same time at two undivided rural schools with 50 children each. This was followed by training as a teacher (state examination) and work at various schools. He was appointed deputy principal, rector and school director. In 1953/54 he found out about American education during a study visit to the United States .

Otto Meyer was one of the founders of the Working Group of Bavarian Young Teachers and held several positions in the Bavarian Teachers' Association. He was active in TSV Burgau, including ten years as head of the tennis department. As chairman of the board of trustees, he took care of the development of the University of Augsburg for 20 years . In the Dillingen district he was a co-founder of the European Union and the Lions Club.

He was married to Erika Meyer, nee Kropmeier, since 1954 and has two sons (Andreas and Thomas).

Political party

From 1960 to 1966 Otto Meyer was constituency manager of the CSU in the districts of Günzburg, Dillingen, Neu-Ulm, Illertissen and Krumbach. He founded more than 120 CSU local associations with 2200 new members, was chairman of the CSU local association in Burgau, district chairman of the CSU in Dillingen, founder and state chairman of the CSU's cultural and political working group.

Otto Meyer was a member of the Bavarian State Parliament from 1966 to 1990, where he was deputy chairman of the committee for cultural policy issues and chairman of the cultural policy working group of his parliamentary group from 1970 to 1988. In the Broadcasting Council of the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation he worked from 1972 to 1988. Meyer had a major influence on the formation of the Bavarian education system. He submitted drafts for a kindergarten law and a new teacher training law. Furthermore, he was responsible for the passing of numerous laws, such as the law for vocational schooling, the adult education law, the university law, the technical college law, the monument protection law, the private school performance law, the law for education and teaching as well as the museum development program, the Bavarian music plan, the promotion of Sports, Customs and Non-State Theaters. Meyer interpreted the educational policy of his party in numerous speeches, articles and essays. The individual support of the child and the young people always played a central role. In the educational policy position paper he drafted, Success in School, Joy in School , he called for 170 proposals to take into account the individuality and capabilities of the students, "Every child should be successful in school", as well as sufficient teaching time for the arts ( Singing, making music, games, sports).

Public offices

Meyer served from June 14, 1988 to October 30, 1990 as State Secretary in the State Ministry for Education and Culture in the governments of the Free State of Bavaria led by Prime Ministers Franz Josef Strauss and Max Streibl .

Otto Meyer received numerous awards and recognitions for his political work: Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (Great Federal Cross of Merit ), Constitutional Medal in Gold of the Free State of Bavaria, Bavarian Order of Merit , Ring of Honor in Gold of the District of Dillingen an der Donau , Golden Medal of Merit of the Great District Town of Dillingen, Silver Citizen's Medal of the city of Burgau , medal for special services to the preservation of monuments , “ pro meritis ” medal for services and culture and education in Bavaria, medal of merit from the University of Augsburg, Lorenz-Wertmann medal from the German Caritas Association, commander's cross from the Order of St. Gregorius , gold medal of merit of the Bavarian State Sports Association, Otto Jochum Medal of the Swabian-Bavarian Singers' Association, sponsorship medal of the Allgäu-Swabian Music Association. Meyer was also an honorary senator of the University of Augsburg, honorary chairman of the cultural policy working group of the CSU, honorary chairman of the CSU district association Dillingen, honorary chairman of the Europa-Union Dillingen and honorary chairman of the senior citizens' union in the district of Günzburg.
