Otto Ritschl (theologian)

Otto Karl Albrecht Ritschl (born June 26, 1860 in Bonn ; † September 28, 1944 there ) was a German Protestant theologian . Ritschl worked at the universities of Halle , Kiel and Bonn .

Life

Otto Ritschl was born on June 26, 1860 in Bonn as the eldest of three children of the Protestant theologian Albrecht Ritschl and his wife Ida (née Rehbock). After the early death of the mother, raising children was up to the father. Ritschl attended high school in Göttingen , where he spent most of his childhood and youth after his father was appointed to the university there in 1864.

After graduating from high school in 1878 and matriculating at the Georg-August University in Göttingen , Ritschl initially did his military service as a one-year volunteer there. From 1879 he studied at the Universities of Bonn and Göttingen Theology . In 1882 he later passed his first theological exam and moved to Gießen , where he studied primarily with Adolf von Harnack and dealt with art history .

In 1885 Ritschl received his doctorate from Willibald Beyschlag at the University of Halle with the dissertation De epistulis Cyprianicis as a licentiate in theology. In the same year he completed his habilitation with the thesis Cyprian von Karthago and the constitution of the church , to which Adolf von Harnack had advised him.

After the death of his father in March 1889, Ritschl became professor for church history at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel and studied his work intensively, published his writings and letters and wrote his biography .

After five years, Ritschl returned to Bonn, where he initially succeeded Ernst Troeltsch as associate professor for dogmatics and was appointed full professor in 1897 . Most of his works were created here.

In the 1920s, Ritschl took part in the “Extraordinary Assembly of the 7th General Synod” and the “Constituent Church Assembly” as a representative of the faculty in Berlin .

After his retirement in autumn 1927, Ritschl taught four more semesters until Karl Barth succeeded him in the 1930 summer semester. In addition, numerous publications followed until 1940.

In the course of his career Ritschl was dean of his faculty in Bonn six times (for the first time 1900/1901), an honorary doctorate of the theological faculty in Kiel (July 29, 1897), in 1915 he was given the title of "secret consistorial councilor " and in 1930 he was given an honorary doctorate in philosophy Faculty in Halle.

Organizations

Ritschl's great commitment was not just of a professional nature.

He was a member of the free conservative and German Reich Party (1885-1889), the National Liberal Party (1889-1894); the German Fatherland Party (1917/18); after 1918 the DNVP and after 1933 the RLB.
