Otto Weddigen

Otto Weddigen (born February 9, 1851 in Minden , † January 29, 1940 in Berlin ; full name: Friedrich Heinrich Otto Weddigen ) was a German literary scholar and writer .

Life

Otto Weddigen was the son of a farmer and a great-grandson of Peter Florens Weddigen . He attended grammar school in Minden and took part in the Franco-German War as a senior prime minister in 1870/1871 , in which he contracted a severe typhoid with symptoms of paralysis. Weddigen studied modern languages, history, literature and aesthetics at the universities in Halle (Saale) , Strasbourg and Bonn . From 1874 he worked as a high school teacher in Schwerin; In the same year he received his doctorate at the University of Rostock with a dissertation on the Roland song to the doctor of philosophy (Dr. phil.). In 1876 he passed the 2nd state examination, and from 1878 to 1888 he taught at a grammar school in Hamm (Westphalia). In 1883 he obtained his habilitation at the Technical University of Hanover . After he did not succeed in being appointed to a university chair, Weddigen continued to work as a high school teacher from 1888 to 1893, now in Wiesbaden . In 1893 he was retired and from then on worked as a freelance writer. In 1897 he moved to (Berlin-) Charlottenburg .

Otto Weddigen's work includes works on literary history, novels, short stories, poems - many of which were set to music - and plays. From 1903 to 1907 he was editor of the monthly magazine "For our little ones". Always extremely patriotic from the start, Weddigen was one of those authors during the First World War who glorified German participation in the war not only with literary texts, but also with non-fiction books on the use of new war weapons such as submarines and airplanes. It is unclear whether there was occasional confusion with the submarine commander of the same name and war hero Otto Weddigen .
