The Rutenbeck (often spelled Ruthenbeck ) is a 2.358 kilometer long stream and a left tributary of the Wupper in the Wuppertal district of Cronenberg . The tautology Rutenbecker Bach is often used for the name of the flowing water . ( Beck is the Low German word for Bach). It is one of the larger streams in the Burgholz State Forest .

etymology

The etymological origin is not entirely clear. According to one interpretation, the name comes from “rod”, which corresponds to diamond (perennial plant, Latin ruta ). According to another interpretation, “rod” comes from the Middle High German word “ruzen” (= to rustle).

topography

The brook rises at around 300 meters above sea level west of the Cronenberg district of Küllenhahn near the old half-timbered yard of Obere Rutenbeck . It initially flows west, after around 130 meters it is fed by an 85-meter-long nameless body of water and now turns in a north-westerly direction. 300 meters further, the stream is interrupted by the former railway line of the Burgholzbahn (also known as the "Cronenberger Samba") - the line is piped under and the stream continues in a northerly direction.

Around 670 meters from the source, the Rutenbeck at the old boundary stone between Cronenberg and Elberfeld receives an inlet from the left from the 428 meter long Honigstaler Bach and turns in a westerly direction. After a further 300 meters, the route of the state road 418 is reached, from which state road 70 branches off shortly before and leads through the Kiesberg tunnel to the Elberfeld district of Arrenberg . The state road 418, which crosses under the Rutenbeck, leads shortly afterwards into the Burgholz tunnel to Küllenhahn on the southern heights .

"Topographia Ducatus Montani" map by Burgholz (1715)

The Rutenbeck runs along the state road 418 through a valley until the valley of the Wupper is reached about 2.1 kilometers after the source. Here the state road 74 , which leads to Solingen via Kohlfurtherbrücke , is crossed. Shortly after that, the stream receives a tributary from the left from the 513 meter long Kleine Meersiepen and flows into the Wupper at the Untere Rutenbeck district , known as Rutenbeck, at around 150 meters above sea level.

Here, a few meters downriver in an easterly direction, is the company's own Rutenbeck sewage treatment plant , which Bayer AG operated alone for a long time . Initially, the management considered transferring it entirely to the Wupperverband , which is supported by the city of Wuppertal. The Rutenbeck sewage treatment plant is exactly opposite on the other side of the river, where the Wupperverband operates the Buchenhofen sewage treatment plant . The Rutenbeck sewage treatment plant is now operated jointly by Bayer HealthCare and the Wupperverband.

history

The courts of Obere Rutenbeck and Untere Rutenbeck date from around 1700 and are mentioned as "Rutenbec" on the Topographia Ducatus Montani map created by Erich Philipp Ploennies in 1715 . They go back to an estate that was first mentioned in 1513.
