Otto Westphal (painter)
Otto Westphal (born April 17, 1878 in Leipzig , † September 5, 1975 in Dresden ) was a German painter , draftsman , graphic artist and craftsman .
life and work
Otto Westphal attended the arts and crafts school in Kassel from 1894 to 1896 and from 1896 the Prussian higher technical school for the textile industry / weaving school in Krefeld . He then worked in handicrafts. In 1899 he went to Berlin and was a student at the teaching establishment of the Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin and in the study atelier for painting and sculpture , the so-called Lewin-Funcke School in Berlin-Charlottenburg.
From 1904 to 1907 he studied at the Dresden Art Academy with Richard Müller and Carl Bantzer . He then worked freelance in Dresden. From here he went on study trips to Danzig , Thuringia, Hesse and on the island of Rügen . In 1924 he went to Italy and Switzerland to study. In 1930 he took a job for the German Archaeological Institute Rome / Pompeii . The Pompeii picture cycle was created there .
Westphal's painterly and graphic work was committed to impressionism . He drew his motifs from his Saxon homeland: this included above all city views of Dresden. He was also productive in his study locations. The artist belonged to the German Association of Artists and the Willingshausen painters' colony .
He was married to Margarete Westphal (1906–1978). The couple has a grave in the Loschwitz cemetery in Dresden.
