Otto Wilhelm Klinckowström (born December 10, 1778 in Stockholm , † January 27, 1850 in Helsingfors ) was a Swedish cavalry officer and Russian-Finnish politician and court official.

Life

Otto Wilhelm von Klinckowström was the son of the royal chamberlain and later court marshal Thure Leonard Klinckowström (1735-1821) and Hedwig Eleonora Countess von Fersen (1753-1792). In 1790 he was an ensign in the Psilanderhjelm Regiment, in 1795 a lieutenant in the Götha Guard and in 1797 in the body hussars. With the latter or with the light dragoons he was promoted to Rittmeister in 1803 . In 1805 and 1806 he took part in the war against the French army in Swedish Pomerania . During the Russo-Swedish War (1808-1809) he fought on the Åland Islands, among other places. In 1809 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and appointed chief adjutant to the king and chamberlain to the queen. In 1810 he was made a Knight of the North Star Order .

He retired from military service, married the widow of an English officer and lived in Italy from 1810 to 1816. From there he fled to Finland , where he was accepted as a baron in the Finnish knight house . In 1816 he was awarded the title of Real Chamberlain at the Imperial Russian Court. In 1821 he was appointed Landshövding in Wiborgs län . He was made a Knight of the Order of St. John before retiring from office in 1825. He was a member of the Imperial Finnish Senate and was appointed Knight of the Russian Order of St. Vladimir 2nd Class in 1828 . In 1830 he was awarded the Russian-Polish Order of St. Stanislaus, 1st class. In 1835 he was given the title of Privy Councilor . In 1836 he became a member of the highest imperial censorship authority in Finland. In 1839 he became a member of the Russian Order of Saint Anne, 1st class. In 1839 he was appointed lieutenant general of the Finnish engineering corps . In 1847 he became a knight of the Imperial and Royal Order of the White Eagle and court master at the Imperial Russian court.

Otto Wilhelm Klinckowström was married to Sarah Brooke, nee Cuthbert, the widow of a colonel, from 1810. With her he had the son Arthur Wilhelm Klinckowström. His second marriage to Elisabeth Krause in 1840 had a daughter.

He amassed a large art collection that was acquired by the Russian heir to the throne Alexander after his death . The collection now belongs to the Finnish National Gallery and is exhibited in the Sinebrychoff Art Museum.
