Family coat of arms of the Klinckowström

Klinckowström , also Klinkowström or Klinckowstroem , is the name of a noble family from Swedish Pomerania . Branches of the family settled in Sweden , East Prussia, and Austria . The ancestors lived under the name Klinkow or Klinckow in Stralsund and possibly came from the place Klinkow near Prenzlau .

history

A Klinkow family was first mentioned in 1320 when the brothers Peter and Johann de Klinkow, citizens and castle owners in the city of Prenzlau, donated an altar to the local Nikolaikirche. Whether they belonged to the knighthood and possibly immigrated from the Altmark cannot be proven. The Klinkows belonged to the city council and traded. Asmus Klinkow was the last verifiable landowner and merchant in Prenzlau around 1474. A pleban Jacobus Klinkow died in Arendsee in 1493 .

Nothing is known about the type of connection between the Prenzlauer Klinkow and the Stralsund Klinkow family, which first appeared in the 15th century. The Stralsund family begins with the councilor Heinrich Klinkow (1456–1508). After Heinrich Berghaus he was possibly a son of Asmus Klinkow. His son Joachim (1497–1551), called the old man , was also a councilor and one of the main promoters of the Reformation in Stralsund . His son Joachim (1518–1601) became mayor in 1559. Joachim's nephew Balthasar (1551-1616) was the senior man of the Gewandhaus and councilor. Duke Philipp Julius von Pommern-Wolgast removed him and other council members in 1612 in the course of the disputes between the duke and the city. His grandson Martin Klinkow (1613–1663) was the progenitor of all Klinkow streams. He acquired the Steinhagen estate through marriage .

His older sons were raised to the Swedish nobility under the name Klinckowström . (According to the Swedish pronunciation, the w is pronounced differently than the name Klinkow.) These were Johann Klinkow (1641–1702), commander of the city and fortress Stralsund, on April 19, 1678 and Martin Klinkow (1650–1717), chief chamberlain and Castle captain, on December 30, 1684. Her brothers Balthasar (* 1656), Joachim (* 1659) and Brand (* 1662) were founded on March 17, 1690 by King Karl XI. also ennobled.

Their descendants mainly devoted themselves to careers in the military and civil service in Sweden and Prussia . Karl Friedrich von Klinkowström was on July 17, 1798 by King Friedrich Wilhelm III. elevated to the rank of counts in Prussia and thus established the count line of the family. The brothers Thure Leonhard, State Secretary and Chief Postal Director in Stockholm, and Gustav Thure Klinckowström, Chancellor, were raised to the status of Swedish barons on January 8, 1759. The Austrian branch was founded by Friedrich August von Klinkowström (1778-1835).

As early as 1682, the assessor at the Wismar Tribunal , Friedrich Klinkow , was raised to the Swedish nobility under the name Klinkow von Friedenschild . With his three sons, who were in military service in different countries, this branch of the family died out in the second generation.
