Otto von Pack (around 1480; † February 8, 1537 in Brussels) was councilor of the Albertine duke George the Bearded of Saxony .

Life

He was the son of Johann von Pack, who had a doctorate in Wettin. Philipp and Hans von Pack were his younger siblings. Valentin Pack, who is enrolled at the University of Erfurt in 1501, was probably one of his brothers.

Pack enrolled in Leipzig in 1499. An Otto Pack who appeared in a group enrollment (together with Valentin Pack) at the University of Erfurt in the summer of 1501 is probably identical to him. In 1512 he was recorded at the University of Cologne before he was enrolled in Mainz from 1513. Enrollment at the University of Ingolstadt in June 1516 is possible. In Leipzig he obtained the Bacc degree between 1519 and 1521. utr. iur., Lic. utr. iur. and the Dr. utr. iur.

After he had been due to various scams in investigation and been dismissed, he launched in 1527 with the Landgrave Philip of Hesse , the false information about a secret alliance that King Ferdinand , the Saxon Duke George and other Catholic stands at 12. May 1527 in Wroclaw to Annihilation of Protestantism and the princes "attached" to it, namely the Ernestine Elector of Saxony ( John the Constant ) and Philip himself.

The Landgrave immediately went to Dresden , and there Pack showed him a copy of the contract on February 18, 1528. Without first ascertaining the authenticity of this document, Landgrave Philipp of Hesse and the elector prepared for a preventive attack in Weimar in March 1528. But on the advice of Martin Luther , who was consulted for self-affirmation and the theological safeguarding of the plan that had already been drawn up, the princes accused by Pack first tried to clarify Pack's indictment.

Ferdinand and Georg denied the existence of the Breslau alliance and demanded a judicial investigation against the false braggart. As a result, the landgrave felt compelled to name Pack. The same person was subjected to an interrogation (but without torture) in Kassel , whereby some of his statements turned out to be false. However, he could not be brought to revoke his statement that he had had the original document with the seals of the princes in his hands.

Philipp therefore insisted on his suspicions and, through the mediation of Pfalz and Trier , forced monetary compensation from Kurmainz and Bamberg for his armaments.

Pack escaped to the Netherlands , but was arrested here at Duke Georg's request after many years of adventure and executed in 1537. The Packs' dealings , however, had produced irritability and bitterness on both sides, including the Kaiser , which had a long lasting effect.
