The Ubangi [ uˈbaŋ.gɪ ] (also Oubangui ) is an approximately 1120 km long right tributary of the Congo in Central Africa . With a water flow of 5,936 m³ / s it is the second largest tributary of the Congo.
River course
The Ubangi arises on the border of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) and the Central African Republic near Yakoma from the confluence of the Mbomou and Uele (main source river). It initially flows about 370 km in a westerly direction, then turns in an elongated arc to the southwest and flows through the central African capital Bangui much later .
Downstream of Bangui, the Ubangi forms the natural border between the aforementioned states for a further 100 km and from there to its mouth the border between the DR Congo and the Republic of the Congo . The Ubangi flows into the Congo around 550 km below Bangui or around 90 km southwest of Mbandaka .
Together with the Uelle , its left, larger source river, the Ubangi is 2272 km long.
In the Central African Republic, the Ubangi has been navigable since 1962 , especially below Bangui , after a 2.5 m deep canal was built between Zangi and Mongo and replaced the Zangi-Mongo railway line that bypassed the rapids . It is one of the most important transportation routes because many roads are often flooded during the rainy season.
The flow is also home to a panchax genus Epiplatys fish belonging, of Epiplatys multifasciatus .
Hydrometry
The flow rate of the river was measured for 83 years (1911–94) in Bangui, about 550 km above the mouth in m³ / s. The mean annual flow rate observed in Bangui during this period was 4092 m³ / s.
