The virus family Corticoviridae ( Latin cortex , bark, crust ) comprises only one monotypic genus corticovirus of bacteriophages . The only so far (as of March 2019) by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses confirmed (ICTV) species pseudoalteromonas virus PM2 (also pseudoalteromonas phage PM2 , PM2 phage , Alteromonas phage PM2 called) a circular, double-stranded DNA - genome and about 56 nm in diameter, unenveloped icosahedral capsid .
construction
The capsomers are made up of trimers of the capsid protein P2; At the corners of the icosahedral structure there are projections ( spikes ) that are formed by the virus protein P1. Inside (!) The capsid there is a lipid membrane vesicle that consists of virus proteins and the lipid membrane of the host bacterium. The PM2 phage has this inner membrane vesicle in common with the Tectiviridae , but the PM2 phage does not use it to inject DNA into the host bacterium.
Genome
The circular genome is packaged in a highly twisted ( supercoiled ) form within the membrane vesicle. The double-stranded DNA is 10,079 bp in size and codes for nine structural proteins (P1-9), five non-structural proteins (P12-16) and seven gene products of unknown function.
Hosts
So far, two marine bacterial species, Pseudoalteromonas BAL-31 and ER72M2 , have been identified as hosts for the PM2 phage.
Systematics
The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) names other candidates in addition to the ICTV-confirmed species:
- Genus corticovirus
- Species Pseudoalteromonas virus Cr39582 ( Pseudoalteromonas phage Cr39582 )
- Species Pseudoalteromonas virus PM2 (type)
- Species " Pseudoalteromonas phage GXT1010 " (proposed)
