The Palais de Justice de Montbenon is a courthouse in Lausanne , Switzerland and the seat of the District Court of Lausanne . It is part of the Swiss inventory of cultural assets of national and regional importance .

location

The justice building is located in the Montbenon quarter in the Center district in Lausanne. It overlooks the Esplanade Montbenon , which is one of the most magnificent flower parks in the city. The building is located on a hilltop with an unobstructed view of Lake Geneva and the Savoy Alps .

history

This prominent location has the origin that the Swiss Federal Court was first located here . It was built from 1881 to 1886 according to the plans of the architect Benjamin Recordon . After the Federal Court moved to Park Mon-Repos in the 1920s , the District Court of Lausanne is now located here.

architecture

The architecture of the building is characterized by an ornamental style of the French Neo-Renaissance . A massive, central structure connects two wings that end in pavilions . Large pillars reinforce the emphatic tone that continues inside the entrance hall.

The facade is adorned with allegorical figures and paintings depicting power , Helvetia and the law . The main facade was created from fifteen different types of stone from all over Switzerland. Various landmarks of national and local patriotism were created on the esplanade around the building after construction . Among them are steles , busts , statues and a chapel . Among others, Alexandre Vinet and Wilhelm Tell are honored.
