Palazzo dei Dieci Savi
Palazzo dei Dieci Savi is a palace in Venice in the Veneto region of Italy . It is located in the Sestiere of San Polo , overlooking the Grand Canal, next to the Rialto Bridge and the Palazzo dei Camerlenghi , near the Church of San Giacomo Apostolo .
history
Antonio Abbondi built the palace in the first half of the 16th century. It became the seat of the Dieci Savi alle Decime (German: ten wise men of the tenth), the financial magistrate of the Republic of Venice . The building had this function throughout the republic.
It has been restored and is in good condition. Then it became the seat of the Magistrato alle Acque (Eng .: water magistrate ), a public office that was dissolved in 2014 as a result of the scandal surrounding the MO.SE project .
description
The palace has a wide facade facing the Ruga degli Oresi and a narrow facade facing the Grand Canal.
The broad facade has a vestibule on the ground floor with 37 round arches , the ribbed vaulted ceilings of which are covered with frescoes, most of which are fairly well preserved.
The two upper floors, separated by long and thick cornices , are designed under the banner of rationality , in keeping with the same function that the palace has. There are two rows of 37 rectangular individual windows in unadorned stone frames. At the very top, a thin, serrated eaves runs under the roof .
The facade facing the Grand Canal is similar: there are four arcades on the ground floor and five pairs of individual rectangular windows on each of the upper floors.
There are only two decorative elements: a statue from the 16th century depicting Justitia , located on the second floor at the corner of the building between the two facades, and a half-relief with a lion of St. Mark in a circular frame from 1848, the epoch of short-lived Repubblica di San Marco in opposition to Austrian rule, which the city had taken away from the Italians shortly before.
