Palizada is a small town with about 3,500 inhabitants and the capital of the municipality of the same name (municipio) with about 10,000 inhabitants in the far west of the Mexican state of Campeche near the border with the state of Tabasco . Because of its colonial city center, it is one of the Pueblos Mágicos .
Toponym
The name Palizada is derived from the vernacular name for the logwood or bloodwood tree native to the South Campeche region , which is mainly used for the production of medicinal dyes (see hematoxylin ).
location
The small town of Palizada is located on the Río Palizada , a tributary of the Usumacinta, only 50 km as the crow flies, but about 230 km drive southwest of the Gulf coast near Ciudad del Carmen at a height of about 5 m . Campeche , the capital of the state, is about 300 km (driving distance) to the northeast. The climate is tropical and humid; The rain, which is abundant by Mexican standards (approx. 1855 mm / year), comes from the Atlantic or the Gulf of Mexico and falls mainly during the summer half-year.

economy
The inhabitants of the area live from fishing and some agriculture, which also includes livestock. Small traders, craftsmen and service providers of all kinds have settled in the small town itself.
history
The place was founded by Spanish settlers in 1772 under the name San Joaquin de la Palizada in the middle of an area sparsely populated by the Chontal Maya . In 1850 the place received limited city rights (villa) , but it was not until 1959 that it was raised to the rank of city (ciudad) .
