Palomino is a corregimiento on the Caribbean coast of Colombia , located about 90 kilometers east of Santa Marta and 72 kilometers southwest of Riohacha . It is part of the municipality of Dibulla on the La Guajira peninsula and is approximately two meters above sea level. Palomino is bordered to the north by the Caribbean Sea, to the south by the municipality of San Juan del Cesar , to the east by the settlement of Mingueo and to the west by the Magdalena department .

The population of Palominos is 2101 (as of 2005), of which almost 80 percent are active in agriculture . Bananas , mangoes , corn and cassava are mainly grown on an area of ​​260 hectares . Also, cocoa and citrus fruits can be found in the region. In addition to agriculture, fishing , handicrafts and individual tourism offer other sources of income.

While a large part of the population has settled along the main road connecting the village, Palomino is known among tourists for the nearby beach and its activities. Backpackers in particular are increasingly coming to this point, which is around 1,500 meters from the main road. In the last few years there have been a number of accommodations and restaurants near the beach where you can spend the night in hammocks, shared accommodations or rustic double rooms. In addition to favorable surfing conditions, the possibility of tubing on the Palomino River attracts many nature lovers. Here the guests are led to a place along the river or you can hike the 40 minutes. to the mouth of the Posso Caimán (small stream inlet) on your own, from where you sit in a rubber tire and drift downriver through nature for two to three hours - to the point where the Palomino flows into the sea. A trip to the waterfalls of Quebrada Valencia , which can be reached by bus in around 30 minutes, is also possible. Santa Marta can also be reached by bus in two to three hours. Despite a large number of resorts, the tourist infrastructure (e.g. restaurants) is very limited. In addition to two bakeries, a pizzeria and various bars, there is nothing to be found in town. However, the number of small shops is enormous. There is an ATM only in Mingueo (15 minutes by taxi shuttle, constantly patrolling the main street) or further away in Santa Marta or Riohacha.

The climate in Palomino is tropical with an average temperature of 24 ° C combined with high humidity and precipitation between 2,000 and 4,000 millimeters annually.
