The I. African Games until 2012, the Pan-African Games called (French .: I ers Jeux africains , Eng .: 1st All-Africa Games ) took place from 18 July to 25 July 1965 in Brazzaville , capital of Republic of Congo held . Around 2500 athletes from 29 countries took part. The Congo team won the soccer tournament. Track and field athletes who have won gold include Gaoussou Koné , Wilson Kiprugut , Kipchoge Keino and Samuel Igun .
In 1965 there was only a very limited range of sporting competitions for women. At the first African Games there was only one basketball tournament with six teams, and in athletics there were six disciplines (100 m, 80 m hurdles, long and high jump, javelin throw, 4 × 100 m relay).

Soccer
Participation in the final tournament of the African Games is basically possible for all nations on the continent. First, the teams have to prevail in qualifying tournaments. The soccer tournament has been a U-23 competition since 1991. In 2003, in addition to the men's tournament, a women's tournament was also held for the first time.
