The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX8 is a mirrorless system camera housing made by Panasonic for the Micro Four Thirds system. It is the successor to the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX7 and has been available in European stores since August 2015.

With the newly developed 20-megapixel sensor, the splash-proof camera has the highest image resolution for Micro Four Thirds systems when it was introduced in 2015 . Another new key feature is "Dual IS"; the 5-axis image stabilization of the camera body is synchronized with the image stabilizer of the lens, if available.

technical features

The camera has aids such as a software magnifying glass , focus peaking , face recognition , electronic spirit level , zebra pattern for overexposed areas of the image before the picture is taken, both on the foldable and swiveling screen and in the foldable electronic viewfinder with a comparatively large viewfinder image in live view mode and a histogram for displaying the distribution of brightness values . The touch-sensitive screen can also be operated while using the viewfinder, for example to move the focus field.

In dual IS mode (IS = image stabilization = image stabilization), the camera allows the image stabilization of the camera housing and lens to be combined. However, older lenses of the camera system require an update of the firmware in order to be able to support this function. This function can be used to take hands-free pictures with 1/10 second exposure even with very small angles of view when using powerful telephoto lenses.

One innovation is the implementation of DFD technology (= D epth F rom D efocus = depth from the blur), in which a special hardware in the camera housing, during the automatic change of the distance setting on the lens, takes only two successive measurements of the changing blur of any Object points, the associated object distances are determined and the lens then adjusts to a suitable object distance in less than a tenth of a second. This means that up to six individual shots per second are possible with full autofocus support. However, this function is only available with lenses that have correspondingly fast motors for focusing and the functions required for setting the object width. A conventional contrast measurement is then carried out for fine adjustment of the distance setting, which works even with very low exposure values down to -4 EV ("starlight autofocus").

The shortest mechanical shutter speed is 1/8000 second, with the (noiseless) electronic shutter it is also possible to set 1/16000 second.

The camera has a 4K video function and in 4k photo mode can take 60 pictures within two seconds.

The GX8 has a built wireless module with support from the Near Field Communication (NFC) , which deals with an app called Panasonic Image App on Android - and Apple iOS - smartphone or tablet computer can connect. This makes it possible to view the current viewfinder image on the end device and to control the camera completely from there.

The lenses of the predecessor of the digital camera system Four-Thirds with automatic functions and lenses of many other camera systems can be used in manual mode via lens adapters that adjust the larger flange focal length .

Test results

In October 2015, the GX8A camera with the powerful Lumix GX Vario 2.8 / 12-35 mm zoom lens was the first camera since 2004 to receive a very good overall rating from Stiftung Warentest in a comparative product test .

There were also excellent ratings in other tests:

  • ColorFoto 10/2015: Best purchase
  • Photo hits 10/2015: overall grade "very good"
  • fotoMAGAZIN 9/2015: Test winner, very good
  • Photography 9/2015: “Product of the month”, very good

In 2016, the synchronized image stabilization Dual IS introduced by Panasonic with the GX8 camera housing was recognized as the best innovation ("European Photo Innovation 2016-2017") by the European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA).
