The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH3 is a digital, mirrorless system camera housing of the manufacturer-independent Micro-Four-Thirds-System . It is the successor to the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH2 and was presented on September 17th, 2012 at the photokina . Sales started at the end of December 2012. It is the first mirrorless system camera that can record films at a data transfer rate of up to 72 megabits per second or 0.54 gigabytes per minute. This value clearly exceeds the maximum specification of AVCHD  2.0 of up to 28 megabits per second that has existed since July 2011 and is used for comparable cameras and camcorders . In 2014, the successor Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 was introduced, which can make video recordings in 4K mode and with up to 200 megabits per second.

technical features

The camera housing of a magnesium alloy is provided with a swiveling and folding, touch-sensitive screen , an electronic viewfinder with diopter adjustment , a built-in flash light and a flash shoe equipped. Contrary to the original intention of being able to make the camera housing and lenses small in the Micro Four Thirds system, the GH3 is the largest and heaviest production model of this system to date, which, however, has advantages in terms of handling.

In addition to the lenses with a Micro Four Thirds bayonet catch, almost all lenses with a sufficiently large image circle can be connected via lens adapters due to the small flange focal length of 20 millimeters . The normal focal length is around 25 millimeters.

The GH3 works exclusively in live view mode for both still and moving images with manual distance setting with a software magnifying glass or with a versatile autofocus system with contrast measurement that can also recognize faces and track motifs. With the help of the electronic shutter , still pictures can be recorded practically noiselessly.

The camera housing is supplied with a lithium-ion battery and can be expanded with an additional battery grip, which has a shutter release button for portrait photography.

In addition to the built-in stereo microphone , the GH3 also has a connection for external microphones for filming .

WIRELESS INTERNET ACCESS

The camera can be controlled and read out by smartphones , tablet PCs or mobile and stationary computers via a WLAN connection . These devices can also record the geographic coordinates of the recording location and add them to the metadata of the recordings.

The camera images can also be transmitted directly to compatible monitors and televisions , even if not while the recording is in progress.

Use in film productions

The ability to record films with a very high data transfer rate in Full HD (1080 × 1920 pixels, 50  full frames per second for the European version, 60 full frames per second for the US version) in the H.264 standard (MOV (I P B ) up to 50 megabits per second), in the AVCHD 2.0 standard (up to 28 megabits per second) or with 25 full frames per second in the all-intra standard (with 72 megabits per second) and with powerful lenses, as well the connection for external microphones also makes the GH3 interesting for high-quality film productions. The videos can also be recorded in slow motion or fast motion and provided with an SMPTE timecode .
