Election result
The Antigua and Barbuda Labor Party (ABLP, formerly Antigua Labor Party ) came back to power after 10 years in the opposition and was able to win 14 of the 17 seats. The United Progressive Party (UPP) of the previous Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer only had three seats out of the previous nine. The ABLP had dominated the country's politics from independence from the UK in 1981 until the 2004 elections. The spouse of the granddaughter of former Prime Minister Vere Bird , Gaston Browne , led the ABLP on in the elections, 2014.
The country's economy had shrunk in the previous five years. In 2010, the UPP government sought a stand-by agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to stabilize the country's debt. The unemployment rate rose from 5 to 25 percent in 10 years. The ABLP promised to abolish personal income tax , create more jobs and attract more investment into the country. The UPP, which was seeking a third term, pledged to revitalize the economy by building a new port and a modern center for the performing arts, as well as research into space technologies.
On June 13, Gaston Browne was sworn in as Prime Minister, making him the country's youngest ever incumbent.
