United States Senate Party Leader

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mitch McConnell (R), the current majority leader
Charles Schumer (D), the current minority leader

The Senate Majority Leader and Senate Minority Leader are senators in the Senate of the United States and the two speakers of the majority and minority fractions in the United States Senate. In this capacity they are the party leaders of the Senate of the United States of America , also known as Floor Leaders of the Senate .

The position and rights of the party leaders are not defined in the constitution , but have developed over time. The Democrats elected their first speaker in the Senate in 1920 and the Republicans in 1925. The respective parliamentary group leader in the Senate has developed into one of the main representatives of his party.

The Assistant Majority Leader and the Assistant Minority Leader are the highest-ranking members of the respective party in the Senate after the Majority Leader and Minority Leader, respectively. Commonly these are also known as Majority Whip and Minority Whip . Your primary task is to collect as many votes as possible for the parties on important issues and draft laws. If no Floor Leader is present at a Senate meeting , the Whip takes on this role.

Tasks and choice

The parliamentary groups represented in the Senate elect their party leaders at a meeting at the beginning of the legislative period. The leader of the larger faction is automatically the majority leader, that of the smaller one is the minority leader. If both parties have the same number of seats, the majority party is the one to which the Vice President of the United States belongs, as the Vice President of the United States makes the decision in votes that end in a tie. The party leaders serve as the primary spokesperson for each party in the Senate; they direct the legislative and executive work of the parties and discuss the Senate calendar. Here the majority leader has the last word.

In parliamentary proceedings, the chairman of the session gives the majority leader the floor first, if several senators want to speak, then the minority leader.
