action

After her two children have grown up, the doctor's wife Suzanne wants to return to her old job of physiotherapy . To this end, an outbuilding on the couple's property is to be converted. During the work, Suzanne and the Spanish construction worker Ivan get closer. Suzanne is unable to concentrate, can only think of Ivan. You want to buy a romantically situated ruined house and remodel it for yourself.

When she confesses her love to her husband Samuel, he becomes palpable and puts numerous obstacles in her way. Due to his influence in the city, he prevents Suzanne from finding work. He has her credit card blocked. Ivan can only find work far away. When Ivan tries to sell works of art from the doctor couple's house, the police arrest him. Samuel promises Suzanne that Ivan will be released when she returns to his house.

When Suzanne has returned to the everyday life of the marriage, everything seems so unbearable to her that she takes her husband's hunting rifle at night, loads it and pulls the trigger at her sleeping husband.

In the final scene, the lovers meet again near the ruined house and embrace while police sirens can be heard in the distance.

Reviews

"Despite a gripping atmosphere and a precise figure drawing, the film suffers from the undecided vacillation between the romantic transfiguration of love as an archaic power that cancels social conventions and the exploration of its social and economic conditionality."

"It is absolutely worth seeing how Catherine Corsini gradually paves the way for this affair, a basically inevitable liaison, which then comes over the characters like a sudden shock."

- Michael Kohler : Frankfurter Rundschau

“Director Catherine Corsini really exhausts every cliché in Die Affäre . Since [...] [help] neither the solid work of the camerawoman Agnès Godard nor the reliably acting trio of actors: Corsini's staging looks so worn, played through a thousand times as the orchestral soundtrack collaged from Truffaut films.
