history

The Passage du Grand-Cerf was built in 1825 on the site of the former Hôtel du Grand-Cerf. The hotel, which belonged to the hospice administration, was sold to Mr. Hermain on April 10, 1812. It was bought on May 24, 1825 by the bank company Devaux-Moisson et Cie, which redesigned the passage and sold it on June 7, 1826 to Isidore Monier, who already owned part of it. But in a book by Marlès, Paris ancien et moderne, of 1837, it is stated, “She has nothing remarkable; They were found to be very beautiful 30 years ago, before the new passages were built. "

The passage's current architecture dates back more to the 1845s than 1825. Around this time, the passage also received the large glass roof. The use of metal constructions has made it possible to place them at great heights, thus exposing high glass surfaces at the level of the internal facades of the shops.

The passage was bequeathed to the public sector in 1862 by the heir of the Monier family. The yield at that time was 87,217 francs with an estimated value of 850,000 francs. But when the income from the passage continued to decline, it was rented and after 1882 auctioned off to a certain Dejuean for the sum of 94,500 francs. This withdrew in 1890. In 1896 the passage only earned 52,627 francs. One report found that this discontent was due to "the excessive neglect in which the building was abandoned".

Investments are needed to maintain it, so the public sector is considering selling it. After some difficulties, the passage was finally sold in 1985. so it was possible to restore the building.

Since 2016, around 20 shops in the Passage have also been accepting Bitcoins as a means of payment.
