Pastor and parish house

The pastors' and parish hall of the Mayor Smidt Memorial Church is a church and cultural building in the Bremerhaven district of Mitte . With the Bürgermeister-Smidt-Gedächtniskirche it is or was the spiritual center of Bremerhaven's city center. According to Gustav Wolf's concept , a largely identical counterpart of the pastor's and parish house on the north side of the church was planned.

construction

The two buildings were completed on February 22, 1953 according to plans by senior building officer Karl Franzius and Otto Schildt (site management). Hermann Wübbe as the client, Wilhelm Kaisen , Gerhard van Heukelum and Hermann Gullasch came to the inauguration . As President of the Church Committee, Ferdinand Donandt represented the Bremen Evangelical Church . Wilhelm Wendebourg, the superintendent of the Geestemünder community, brought the greetings from the other churches in Bremerhaven - all members of the Evangelical Lutheran regional church of Hanover , to which the Great Church (for 15 years) had also been defeated during the time of National Socialism .

“As plain and simple as the exterior of the entire building complex is - the solid material still makes for a good effect - the interior is just as plain. By using only the best materials for floors and ceilings, they too are effectively designed. The community hall is equipped with attractive lighting fixtures, the lighting effects of which have already been widely admired. The parish hall fulfills its task of serving not only church, but also other cultural events by having loose seating [for 300 people] instead of the usual bench arrangement of the church rooms. Despite its simplicity, the hall has a festive character. "

- Nordsee-Zeitung (1953)

The simple, single-storey pastor's house is set back and parallel to Bürgermeister-Smidt-Strasse . It comprised the confirmation hall on the right and the club room above it, and official apartments on the left.

The large parish hall is connected to the pastor's house. With a total of seven arcades , it stands across the pastor's house. Five arcades are facing the Great Church to the northwest, two on the gable side to the southwest, facing the "Bürger". The Thea Mügge bookstore was on the ground floor of the parish hall until 2014 . Today the rooms are used by TUI . Office and sales rooms were on the mezzanine floor.

Concerts

From 1960 to 2005 the hall was the most important concert hall in Bremerhaven. The North German Concert Directorate brought local and international musicians to the stage. Programs from 1961 to 1997 are no longer available. The master concert series was discontinued in 2005 due to the aging of the audience. Since then, the hall has rarely been used.
