Patrick Patterson (born January 19, 1941 in Montréal , Canada as Pierre Clermont , † December 2, 2020 in Miami , Florida ), better known by his ring name Pat Patterson , was a Canadian wrestler and wrestling official. His greatest achievement was winning the Intercontinental Championship , which he was the first wrestler to receive, and being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 1996.
Wrestling career
In 1958 Clermont made his debut as a wrestler in Montreal . In the 1960s he was nine times Tag Team Champion and six times United States Champion in the National Wrestling Alliance . In the mid-1970s he left the NWA and was employed by the World Wrestling Federation (now WWE) from 1979 . There Clermont won the WWF North American Championship on June 19, 1979 against Ted DiBiase . This was united in the same year with the South American Championship and the WWF Intercontinental Championship , with him as the first title holder.
His "Alley Fight" match against Sgt. Slaughter on May 4, 1981 at Madison Square Garden is considered one of the best matches of the 1980s and was named "Worked Match of the Year" by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter . In 1984 he ended his wrestling career. Afterwards Clermont worked as a sports commentator and as a booker in wrestling and became a close associate of Vince McMahon . During this time he often appeared in front of the camera as the simple-minded henchman of McMahon and was used for comedy segments. During this time, Clermont was allowed to win the WWF Hardcore Championship and, at the age of 59, became the oldest holder of this title in WWF history. Since then he has increasingly worked as a creative consultant behind the scenes, developing storylines.
On April 17, 2014, Clermont was seen as a participant in the show "WWE Legends' House" on the WWE Network.
Private life
Clermont was the godfather of Stephanie McMahon-Levesque , the daughter of Vince McMahon . He was openly homosexual after hiding his sexual orientation from the public for five decades.
On December 2, 2020, he died in a Miami hospital due to cancer .
