Patchwork Family is a German soap opera produced by Filmpool for the television station Sat.1 . It was broadcast from January 28, 2013 to March 8, 2013 on weekdays in the station's evening program.
Concept of the series
The series describes the everyday life of a German “ blended family ”. The daily routine of the 41-year-old widowed driving instructor Michael and his 37-year-old partner Christina, a police officer by profession, is shown. Both met a year and a half before the series began and moved into a house in Schildow near Berlin together. Both Christina and Michael each bring four children from previous relationships. Christina's parents, Kurt and Marlies, and Michael's parents Toni and Sissi also greatly enrich everyday family life. Furthermore, Christina's older sister Doro with her family, her younger sister Niki as well as Michael's brother Olaf and his partner Henning also join.
Style of the series
The series is shot in a documentary style. The camera is often shaky to make the action look more authentic. The actors comment on actions or events as well as emotional states in a kind of interview form. The protagonists give the interviews while they are sitting on a sofa, and parallels to the American mockumentary- comedy Modern Family are evident . The drawing of some characters from Patchwork Family is also based on the American model. For example, the idea with the gay couple from Modern Family was adopted, including the fact that one is red-haired and the other is overweight.
production
Initially, 120 episodes had been commissioned for the first season. However, only 58 episodes were actually shot, the last episode aired on April 19, 2013. The series is played exclusively by amateur actors .
