Patrick Paul D'Souza

Patrick Paul D'Souza (born April 28, 1928 in Bendur , Mangalore , † October 16, 2014 ) was Bishop of Varanasi .

Life

Patrick Paul D'Souza, son of a family of 15 children, entered the Ajmer Minor Seminary at the age of twelve. He studied philosophy in the Jeppu seminary in Mangalore and theology in Rome, where he was ordained a priest on December 20, 1953 . In 1956 he received his doctorate in theology. He was rector of the theological college in Ajmer and general secretary of the CBCI (Catholic Bishops' Conference of India).

Pope Paul VI appointed him on June 5, 1970 Bishop of Banaras . The Archbishop of Bombay , Cardinal Valerian Gracias , donated him episcopal ordination on August 8 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Angelo Innocent Fernandes , Archbishop of Delhi , and Leo D'Mello , Bishop of Ajmer and Jaipur . A year later the diocese was renamed Varanasi . He was India's youngest bishop at the time.

In the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India he was chairman of the Commission for Social Communication, and was instrumental in founding the National Institute for Social Communication, Research and Education (NISCORT).

On February 24, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related retirement.

He was the brother of the writer Leo John Souza .
