The Roman Catholic Diocese of Varanasi ( lat. : Dioecesis Varanasiensis ) is in India situated Roman Catholic diocese based in Varanasi .

history

The diocese of Varanasi was on July 11, 1946 by Pope Pius XII. established from the cession of territory by the diocese of Allahabad as the Apostolic Prefecture of Gorakhpur . On September 17, 1958, was Apostolic Prefecture of Gorakhpur in apostolic prefecture Benares Gorakhpur renamed. The Apostolic Prefecture of Benares-Gorakhpur was raised to a diocese on June 5, 1970 and renamed the Diocese of Banaras . The diocese was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Agra as a suffragan . On May 14, 1971, the name was changed to the Diocese of Varanasi . The diocese of Varanasi gave up on June 19, 1984 parts of its territory to establish the Gorakhpur eparchy .

The diocese includes the districts of Varanasi , Azamgarh , Ballia , Chandauli , Ghazipur , Jaunpur and Mau in the state of Uttar Pradesh .
