Eugene Joseph

Eugene Joseph (born October 8, 1958 in Madurai , Tamil Nadu , India ) is an Indian clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Varanasi .

Life

Eugene Joseph studied at St. Charles Seminary in Nagpur and received the sacrament of ordination for the diocese of Varanasi on April 10, 1985 . After ordination, he earned further degrees in educational science from Gorakhpur University in Varanasi , in English from Mahatma Gandhi KV University in Varanasi and a Master of Business Administration from the Townsend School of Business in New York City .

After years of chaplaincy, he became sub-rain at the boys' college in 1989 and from 1990 headed the St. John Inter-College in Varanasi. From 1997 he was also pastor of a parish in Ghazipur and was responsible for educational and financial issues at the diocesan level. From 2001 he headed the pastoral care center of the regional bishops' conference based in Varanasi. After studying in New York from 2006 to 2008, he became director of the diocesan St. Mary's Hospital and the affiliated nursing school in Varanasi.

2012 Bishop appointed him Raphy Manjaly the Vicar General . Since December 2013 he has administered the diocese of Varanasi as diocesan administrator during the Sedis vacancy .

On May 30, 2015, Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Varanasi. He was ordained bishop by the Apostolic Nuncio in India, Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio , on August 24 of the same year. Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Bombay , Cardinal Oswald Gracias , and the Archbishop of Agra , Albert D'Souza .
