Patrick Thomas O'Reilly

Patrick Thomas O'Reilly (born December 24, 1833 in Kilnaleck , County Cavan , Ireland , † May 28, 1892 ) was an Irish-American Roman Catholic clergyman and bishop of Springfield .

Life

Patrick Thomas O'Reilly came to the United States as a child and studied at St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore . On August 15, 1857, the Bishop of Portland , David William Bacon , donated the sacrament of ordination for the Diocese of Boston to him . He has served in parish ministry in Worcester and Boston.

On June 23, 1870 Pope Pius IX appointed him . first bishop of the diocese of Springfield, established a few days earlier . The Archbishop of New York , John McCloskey , donated him episcopal ordination on September 25 of that year ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Boston, John Joseph Williams , and the Bishop of Albany , John Joseph Conroy .

During his more than twenty years in office, the number of Catholics in the diocese doubled to around 200,000. At the beginning he had 43 priests available for pastoral care. By the time he died there were 196. O'Reilly established 53 parishes and consecrated 45 churches. In addition to the nearly one hundred foundation stones he laid for churches and schools, he established a hospital in Holyoke and orphanages in Worcester and Holyoke.
