John Joseph Conroy

John Joseph Conroy (born July 25, 1819 in Clonaslee , County Laois , Ireland ; † November 20, 1895 in New York City , USA ) was Bishop of Albany .

Life

John Joseph Conroy attended the Collège de Montréal . Conroy then studied philosophy and Catholic theology at Mount St. Mary's Seminary in Emmitsburg and St. John's College in Fordham . He received on May 21 in 1842 by the Bishop of New York , John Joseph Hughes , the sacrament of Holy Orders .

In 1843 John Joseph Conroy became Vice Rector of St. John's College at Fordham. Conroy became pastor of St. Joseph's Parish in Albany in 1844 . There he founded the St. Vincent orphanage . In 1857 John Joseph Conroy became vicar general of the Albany diocese.

On July 7, 1865, Pope Pius IX appointed him . to the Bishop of Albany. The Archbishop of New York, John McCloskey , ordained him episcopal on October 15 of that year ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Buffalo , John Timon CM , and the Bishop of Brooklyn , John Loughlin .

John Joseph Conroy resigned as Bishop of Albany on October 16, 1877, and Pope Leo XIII. thereupon appointed him titular bishop of Curium .

Conroy attended the First Vatican Council .
