Paul B. Fenton

Paul B. Fenton (born in London in 1951 ) is a contemporary historian and orientalist who teaches as a professor of Middle Eastern and Jewish Studies at the University of Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV) . His research focus is the study of Judaism in Islamic countries.

biography

Paul B. Fenton was born in London in 1951 into a Jewish family. As a young man he attended the Etz Chaim Yeshiva and the Jews' College there , renamed the London School of Jewish Studies at the turn of the millennium . In the early 1970s he received BA and MA degrees in Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Strasbourg in France . He then studied at the Université Saint-Joseph University in Beirut , Lebanon . He received his doctorate at the Sorbonne under Georges Vajda (1908-1981).

After completing his doctorate , he taught Arabic at Cambridge University , where he also worked as a research assistant while studying the documents from the Cairo Geniza . From 1982 to 1992 he taught Hebrew and Hebrew literature at the University of Lyon and from 1992 to 1997 at the University of Strasbourg Hebrew literature. He has been a lecturer at the Sorbonne since 1997 and was later appointed deputy head of the Department of Arabic and Hebrew Studies at the university. Over the years he has been a visiting scholar at numerous universities, including the Hebrew University of Jerusalem , Bar Ilan University , Oxford University and others.

Fenton's research interests include various areas, with a focus on medieval Jewish thought, North African Judaism, the Cairo Genisa and the influence of Sufism on medieval Judaism, with a particular focus on the Jewish-Sufi movement of Hasidim in Egypt and the Jewish- Muslim relationships focused. In addition, he published scientific editions of the works of the great sages of Spain, such as the Kitab al-durar ( A Book in Praise of God and the Israelite Communities ) by Rabbi Juda al-Charisi (1165-1225), which he wrote in 2009 together with Joshua Blau and Joseph Yahalom has compiled and published a new and translated edition. For example, Fenton wrote the article on Jewish mysticism for the encyclopedia Medieval Islamic Civilization by Josef W. Meri (ed.) .

In 2010 he was awarded a medal named after Alexandre Safran for his contributions to Jewish studies .
