Paul Becker (journalist)

Paul Becker (born May 1, 1910 in Munich , † January 23, 1984 in Salzburg ) was a German-Austrian journalist.

Life

Becker graduated from secondary school and then studied political science and art history in Heidelberg , Dijon and Paris . In 1933 he received his doctorate from the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg .

From 1930 to 1933 he worked as an editor for Mannheim newspapers. In 1934 and 1935 he worked as a press officer for the construction industry group in Mannheim, then at the Textile Week in Berlin and as a cultural editor. From 1939 to 1945 he was enlisted in the Wehrmacht .

From September 1945 he worked as an editor for world news for the US broadcaster Rot-Weiß-Rot in the Salzburg studio. He soon began to set up the culture and science department at this same studio and became its head. At the end of 1950 he succeeded Emmerich Zillner , after he had moved to Vienna , and became director of the studio.

When the station in Salzburg was closed, he became director of the ORF and was given the task of continuing the state studio. He was reappointed in 1967 and 1971.

He retired in 1975.

Act

In his sphere of activity fell above all to portray the cultural life of Salzburg. Radio broadcasting of the Salzburg Festival fell into his competence . He initiated other long-lasting series such as Du holde Kunst , Salzburg Mozart Lesson and regular scientific and cultural events such as the Salzburg Night Studio from November 1956 or the Salzburg Humanism Talks. Despite its initiatives at the beginning in 1954, the state studio could only be completed in 1972.

In addition to his work at ORF, from the beginning of the 1960s he was also the author and (co-) editor of numerous works on art history and on the cultural landscape and history of the state of Salzburg.
