Paul Ferdinand Segond (born May 8, 1851 in Paris ; died October 27, 1912 there ) was a French surgeon and gynecologist . His specialties included urinary tract surgery, vaginal surgery for cancer, myoma and uterine removal.

Life

Segond was a son of the anatomist Louis-Auguste Segond (1819-1908). He studied medicine in Paris, became an assistant doctor in 1875 and completed his training in 1880 with a doctorate . As early as 1878 he was employed as a prosector of the faculty, which he held until 1882. He then operated on various hospitals in Paris, became - together with the surgeon Ulysse Trélat (1828–1890) - head physician at the Clinique Baudeloque and qualified as a surgeon in 1883. After a few years at the Clinique Baudelocque , he succeeded in 1905 Paul Jules Tillaux (1834–1904) at the Paris University Hospital, the Salpêtrière , and held this position until his death in 1912.

Segond's first important publications concerned surgery of the urinary organs . He developed a special autoplastic procedure for the treatment of bladder exstrophy , with the aim of avoiding postoperative complications.

Later he turned under the influence of Jules Émile Péan the gynecological operations to and perfected primarily vaginal hysterectomy . He also operated on carcinomas and uterine fibroids using this access.

He was also one of the leading knee specialists in France in the 19th century. In 1879 he described the Segond fracture, later named after him, an avulsion fracture of the lateral collateral ligament from the lateral edge of the tibia on the knee joint , which is often associated with a cruciate ligament tear .
