Paul Hirsch (resistance fighter)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Paul Hirsch (born October 25, 1907 in Berlin , † August 21, 1945 near Qaraghandy ) was a German communist, worker and resistance fighter against National Socialism .

Life

Paul Hirsch was born on October 25, 1907 in Berlin and lived in his father-in-law's house at Pilatusweg 28 in Berlin-Mariendorf until his arrest . He and his wife Herta Ackermann had two sons.

He was a member of the German Metal Workers Association , the Revolutionary Trade Union Opposition and, since 1927, in the KPD . In addition, he was active in the workers' sports club "Fichte". As a trained toolmaker , he worked at the Askania works in Mariendorf since 1938 .

Through his wife he got in touch with Hans Coppi and Hilde Coppi and through Johannes Paukka with the Saefkow-Jacob-Bästlein organization . Together with Richard Bergow and Paul Junius , he managed the illegal cell in the Askania works in Mariendorf. This attempted to hinder arms production in the factories by means of sabotage and distributed food to the forced laborers interned in the area . Paul Hirsch organized money collections and distributed illegal leaflets, his code name in the group was Franz.

He was arrested in the course of the persecution and smashing of the Saefkow-Jacob-Bästlein organization on July 11, 1944, was first imprisoned at the Alexanderplatz police headquarters and from August 21, 1944 in the Lehrter Strasse cell prison in Berlin-Moabit . During the interrogation by the Gestapo , he was beaten to hospital maturity. On November 28, 1944, he managed to escape on the way to his trial before the People's Court .

Since he could not be hidden in Berlin, he set out for the eastern front. According to various sources, he was either forcibly sent to the Eastern Front in Silesia after being picked up by a Wehrmacht patrol, or voluntarily made a Soviet prisoner of war. Despite being well cared for in a Soviet military hospital , he died on August 21, 1945 near Qaraghandy of exhaustion and the consequences of the injuries he had suffered in captivity.

His son Helmut repeatedly reports as a contemporary witness at events about his father and the life of the family under National Socialism .

Honors

A stumbling block in front of the house at Pilatusweg 28 planned for 2009 was not moved.

On September 13, 2014, through the initiative to commemorate the workers' resistance against the Nazi regime and with a speech by his son Helmut Hirsch on the site of the former Askania works in Mariendorf, in memory of seven workers who died in the Askania works lost their lives, a memorial plaque was erected.
