Paul Humburg (born April 22, 1878 in Mülheim am Rhein , † May 21, 1945 in Detmold ) was a German Reformed theologian .

Life

Paul Humburg studied theology at the Universities of Halle , Erlangen , Bonn and Utrecht . In 1906 he took up his first parish in Dhünn in the Bergisches Land . From 1909 to 1919 he was pastor of the Evangelical Reformed Congregation in Elberfeld . In the war years 1915 to 1918 he completed "Peace Work in War" on behalf of the German Christian Student Association (DCSV) as a volunteer field preacher on the Eastern Front , and from 1919 to 1921 he was its general secretary at the association's headquarters in Berlin . From 1921 to 1929 Humburg was federal warden of the " West German Young Men Association " (today CVJM Westbund ) in Barmen (today Wuppertal ). From 1929 to 1942 he was pastor of the Evangelical Reformed Community of Gemarke in Wuppertal-Barmen. During this time, from 1934 to 1942, Humburg was President of the Confessional Synod of the Rhineland ecclesiastical province , and from 1934 to 1936 a member of the “Provisional Leadership of the German Evangelical Church”, which met in Berlin. On January 1, 1943, Humburg, meanwhile seriously ill, retired.

Honors

The University of Bonn awarded Paul Humburg the distinction of Lic. Theol. hc, later also an honorary theological doctorate .
