Paul Gennrich

Paul Johannes Gennrich (born December 15, 1865 in Zachan ; † February 1, 1946 in Wernigerode ) was a German Protestant theologian and general superintendent .

Life

After studying, doing a doctorate and habilitation, Gennrich was a private lecturer at the theological faculty of the University of Berlin from 1896 to 1899 . During his studies he became a member of the Germania Berlin choir in 1883 , and later also of the Old Prussian choir of Königsberg ( German choir ). He was then appointed by the Prussian Regional Church to be the founding director of the Protestant seminary in Dembowalonka near Briesen (West Prussia) . In 1906 he became Konsistorialrat in Berlin. His task was to relieve the General Superintendent of Berlin from administrative tasks. In October 1907 he became professor of practical theology at the University of Breslau and university preacher. In addition he was consistorial counselor in the church province of Silesia . In 1911 he became general superintendent of the southeast district of the ecclesiastical province of Saxony . In 1917 he became general superintendent of the Church Province of East Prussia . In this function he appointed the later general superintendent of the Kurmark Walter Braun , based in Potsdam, as pastor in 1921 at the church of Kaukehmen . In addition to leading the consistory, he held the position of First Court Preacher at the Königsberg Castle Church . At the same time, he took over an honorary professorship for hymnology at the theological faculty of Albertus University . After Gennrich publicly spoke out in favor of Friedrich von Bodelschwingh as Reich Bishop of the German Evangelical Church in 1933 , he and seven other superintendents were removed from office on July 1, 1933 by August Jäger, the state commissioner for the Prussian regional churches , and retired. He spent the last years of his life in Wernigerode.
