Paul Koralus

Paul Koralus (born December 16, 1892 in Widminnen , Lötzen district , East Prussia province ; † January 10, 1991 in Minden , East Westphalia ) was a German painter , graphic artist and sculptor .

Life

Paul Koralus was the son of a Widminner factory owner. He had thirteen siblings. Koralus was deaf from birth. He attended the deaf schools in Angerburg and Tilsit until 1910. Koralus attended the Königsberg art and trade school as a student of Peter H. Feist until 1911, and the Königsberg art academy with Stanislaus Cauer from 1911 to 1914 . From 1914 to 1918 he studied at the Dresden Art Academy under Werner Wrba and Georg Wrba , whose master class he became.

In addition to sculpting, Koralus also perfected himself in lithography and copperplate engraving . From 1926 he worked as a freelancer, from 1931 to 1944 in his home town of Widminnen.

After fleeing from East Prussia, Koralus found a new home in Häverstädt near Minden , where he was able to set up his own studio again. He spent his twilight years together with his wife Erika, without whom his artistic work would not have been possible, in the Albert Nisius Home in Minden.

Paul Koralus died at the age of 99. He found his final resting place next to his wife in the cemetery in Häverstädt, where one of his sculptures can be seen on the gable of the cemetery chapel.

Works

Much of his work up to 1944 was found in churches and schools in East Prussia, among others. a. in Widminnen , Milken , Neuhoff , Angerapp , Lyck , Sensburg , Gumbinnen and Schloßberg . The themes of his work were often religious and historical representations, but also the magic of his East Prussian homeland.

Many of the works he created in Minden are now in the care of the East Prussia Cultural Center in Ellingen . Some works are privately owned.
