Paul Matte (* 1854 ; † 1922 ) was a German aquarist , fish breeder and ornamental fish importer and exporter in Berlin-Lankwitz .

In the 1880s, he and Kühn ran a "breeding establishment" for ornamental fish in Lankwitz near Berlin, which he continued and expanded considerably after Kühn's death. At that time it was the only breeding company in Germany and was mentioned in the magazines Die Gartenlaube and Isis . Mat increased and imported "every year thousands" Macropodus ( Paradise Fish ), telescope and Japanese Veiltail -Jumping Goldfish and export them to "self overseas places."

In 1883 Matte introduced goldfish and bred particularly high-finned specimens of the "veil fish ", the breeding line was referred to as the "Matte strain". Many ornamental fish, including perch , catfish and toothfish , were introduced to Germany and multiplied by him, some of them for the first time (such as the ten-spotted karfling discovered by Charles Darwin ). Via Moscow in 1896 Matte got to 10 pairs of offspring of the Siamese fighting fish ( Betta splendens ) which was first introduced in 1892 by Jeunet - Paris. In 1897 40 pieces of the striped gourmand ( Colisa fasciata , syn. Trichogaster fasciatus ) were first imported and propagated by him from Calcutta . In March 1905 he first introduced the wild form of the zebrafish ( Danio rerio ) from India. He received the swordtail ( Xiphophorus hellerii ) for the first time in March 1909.

The specific epithet matei of the tetra species Hemigrammus matei refers to Paul Matte. Eigenmann does not name Matte directly in his description, but the original label of the type specimens identify him as the donor, so that the name after him is undoubtedly given despite the incorrect spelling. In 1906 Köhler described the subspecies Haplochilus panchax mattei, which was later viewed as a separate species Aplocheilus mattei and is now a synonym for Aplocheilus panchax .
